MOVIE REVIEW: Along Came a Shadow

Along Came a Shadow is a horror short film about two thieves who while on the run after their latest robbery, discover that their hideout is haunted by unexplained supernatural forces hidden behind the lens of a camcorder.

Joseph Herrera as Grayson

The movie stars Joseph Herrera as Grayson or Gray, a young man who is in need of extra cash to support his mother’s chemotherapy costs. After being roped into a string of robberies by some of his friends, he and the other thieves find themselves responsible for accidentally killing a gas station clerk who they planned to rob. Co-starring in the film is Christina Gonzalez as Jen, a thief and friend of Grayson who meets him at the hideout as they wait for their friends and fellow thieves Brooke and Trent to arrive.

Along Came a Shadow opens with an explanation for the strange occurrences that happen in the home. The Shadow (portrayed by Stephen Kucera) was involved with black magic which trapped his spirit in the camcorder. This film is a proof-of-concept that is seeking distribution for a feature-length version, which may explain how the shadow character became trapped in the camera. Cynthia Santiago portrays Priscilla, a caring mother at her wits end with her ex-husband and abusive father of their son Ethan (The Shadow). Her husband is asleep when Priscilla breaks into their former shared home and attempts to murder him.

I overall enjoyed the quality of this film. For a low-budget proof-of-concept short, the audio, color, and editing are fantastic! The direction and producing from Joseph Herrera brought out the brilliant performance of newcomer Christina Gonzalez, who up until this point mostly has been a background actress. I enjoyed the physicality of Cynthia’s role and the dynamic between her character and the Robert character (portrayed by Miles Stoner). As this is a short, there isn’t a full explanation for the events occurring in the film nor is there a lot of blood to please the horror audience, this movie does feel promising as a feature-length project. For that I give Along Came a Shadow five camcorders out of five ๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿ“น๐Ÿ“น
